Approximately 1 year ago this month (March ’16), I began my crossfit workouts. My children had worked out at Barbarian Crossfit for a couple summers prior. They loved coming home and telling me what they did and what a good workout it was. However, they always ended that conversation with, “you could never do it”!! The challenge was on!
I was a college athlete and always worked out until I turned 40! This was the time when my kids were all doing their sports and we were constantly traveling or taking them to games and practices. Lack of time was my excuse.
Fast forward, 8 years, I had put on 20lbs and was not feeling healthy! I began working out 3 times a week at a friend’s house in the morning. I also started to run 2-3 times a week. (albeit, 1 mile intervals). This was a start but after 4 months I saw little to no results. I tried to change diet but was not sure of what to change or why!
So in Feb 2015, I took the kids challenge and joined Barbarian Crossfit for 3 months. I began to see results immediately. I lost 10lbs in that initial 3 months. I signed up for additional months and continued to lose weight. During my time at Barbarian I have also completed four 5k races (within 1 year). Now, I have lost 25 lbs. in the 1 year but more importantly, I feel healthier and stronger. Barbarian is not just about the WODs! I have also learned a great deal about BMI, building muscle and healthy eating habits (not just the “what to eat” but the “why”).
Besides losing weight and feeling stronger, I was able to set an example to my kids and show them that even a 48 year old mom CAN do crossfit!
